We’re halfway through week 1 of school! I’m taking a variety of photo and film classes; it’s shaping up to be a great fall. I don’t have much to share at the moment, but I will share one nice blurb from yesterday.
We had just finished the standard day-one-of-school introductions in Critical Issues in Photography. Our professor then questioned us, “now, the names I’ve just listed here are indeed the names you wish to go by, correct?”
Interrupting the silence, he began to tell a story. “Good, because I had an experience once where a girl was in my class and her name was written as such on the roster.”
He made his way over to the chalk board and scribbled up in big letters, “Le-a.”
The class concensus was that \lee-ah\ (like the common name, Lea) could be the only logical pronunciation of this strange and unusual title.
But no!
The professor went on to explain that after nearly a month of addressing this girl as “Lea,” he recieved an e-mail and a follow up phone call from Le-a’s mother.
“My daughter tells me that you’ve been mispronouncing her name in class, and I wish that you would begin to call her by her real name,” explained the woman.
“Well, mam, Le-a hasn’t corrected me thus far, so I’m afraid I was unaware that I had the wrong pronunciation.”
The woman then stated, “well, that’s fine, but her name is pronounced \leh-dash-ah\.”
